____________
Two years ago, prior to moving to BC from AB, I had no idea what sustainability, carbon footprint or alternate energies meant. Last year my employer – Empac Eng sponsored me and my children (10 and 7) to attend the Film Fest. Our eyes were opened and we have not looked back.
After the Film Fest, my daughter committed to reducing her shower time and saving the water for her brother’s bath. My son committed to turning off unused lights. We planned a community get together to get to know our neighbors and build a stronger sense of community, and we committed to talk about our new found knowledge with family and friends.
In addition to our commitments, new ideas came along that we have been learning about and finding ways to include them in our lifestyle.
Things like:
- Composting
- Reducing fuel emissions
- Hanging our laundry to dry (in the winter too!)
- Turning down our thermostat
- Car pooling
- No plastic bags – including the produce bags
- Co housing
- Humanure toilets
- Homeschooling
- Reducing work hours to spend more time with family
- Gardening
- No TV
- Wood cook stove
- Bringing our own mugs
- Shopping at thrift stores
- Cooking at home
- No meat
- Organic food
- Taking public transport
- Biking for groceries
- Using the library
- Turning off the computer
- Unplugging unused electronics
- Putting a lit on boiling pasta
- Eating together
Even at work we are finding way of being more responsible:
- Composting
- Recycling paper
- Printing less
- Turning out the lights on a sunny day
- Using mugs instead of styrophome
- Fair-trade brew
- Shared soup days
- Car pooling
- Focusing on alternate energy projects
We are excited to see what our new year brings with new learning and new experiences.

Im so thrilled your back! Let's spur each other on with our writings. I like what I read...but humanure toilets? Did I read that right?
yup :) Google it. Its a sustainable way to compost waste that doesn't cause a huge pile of stinky sh**.
